Strive Not to Drive at Autoholics Anonymous

Well, this certainly has our save-the-world mind spinning. It’s Autoholics Anonymous which offers a 12-step program to automobile independence. That’s right. The group’s motto is “Strive not to Drive.” Hmmmmm. That sounds like a plan.

Autoholics.org is a European-based Web site, which states “The idea of a self-help programme for ‘car addicts’ might sound absurd at first. Yet Autoholics Anonymous is a serious, if light-hearted, 12-month, 12-step programme to help you become happier, healthier and wealthier by reducing your car dependence.”

For only £9.95 (not sure what the U.S. price would be) you can become a member and receive the following:

  • A welcome letter
  • A membership certificate
  • An easy-to-follow 12-month, 12-step programme with practical, painless and fun weekly tasks and activities
  • The practical guidebook ‘Cutting Your Car Use’ by Anna Semlyen
  • A ‘Recovering Car Addict’ bumper sticker and bike sticker
  • An Autoholics Anonymous key fob (with its ‘Strive Not to Drive’ reminder)
  • Access to a member forum on Autoholics.org

Although abandoning automobiles may not be practical in many parts of the United States, reducing our dependence on our four-tired friends could have a big impact on our bulging waistlines, our wallets, gasoline costs and consumption, and air quality. The Web site encourages people to walk, bike, or take public transportation. Testimonies from recovering car addicts, links to carfree promoting Web sites, resources, a members forum designed to “help you along on your path to a less car-dependent life,” and our favorite – games – are also included on the site.

Spend some time at Autoholics.org. If the site can’t get you to give up your wheels, at least it will make you smile.
